Marimo Moss Ball means “seaweed ball” and is not moss abut a rare form of spherical algae.
What is the Legend of the Moss Ball?
According to a well-known Japanese legend, two lovers from different social classes were forbidden to be together. They fled into the forest, eventually jumping into Lake Akan to be together forever. Their spirits were transformed into Marimo moss balls, which symbolize eternal love and devotion.
Because of this romantic tale, Marimo Moss Balls are often given as gifts to symbolize deep affection, commitment, and good luck in love.
Light Requirements
Keep your Marimo in low to medium indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight, which can cause browning or overheating in glass enclosures. Marimo thrive in cool environments and can photosynthesize in household light. In spaces without windows, place them near a fluorescent or full-spectrum bulb.
Watering
Change the water every two weeks using cool tap water, letting it sit for 24 hours beforehand. In summer, change more frequently due to quicker evaporation. If algae forms on the enclosure, clean it with a brush.
General Care
Browning: If it turns brown, make sure they’re moved to a cooler location with less direct light. If it continues add a small amount of aquarium salt.
Round Shape: Gently agitate the water in your Marimo terrarium & let them settle back to the bottom on a different side.
Floating: Gently squeeze your moss balls to pop an air bubble.
