The Poison Garden

Foxglove — Digitalis
Tall, romantic spires of bell-shaped flowers hide a dangerous secret. Foxglove contains powerful cardiac glycosides and has a fascinating history as both a poison and the botanical source of important heart medicines. Its fairy-tale appearance has also connected it with folklore and enchantment for centuries.

Aconite / Wolfsbane — Aconitum
With dramatic hooded blossoms, aconite has earned ominous names including wolfsbane and monkshood. One of the most notoriously poisonous garden plants, it appears throughout mythology and folklore as a poison associated with witches, werewolves, and ancient legends.

Belladonna / Deadly Nightshade — Atropa belladonna
Dark berries and mysterious bell-shaped flowers give belladonna its unmistakably gothic reputation. Its name means “beautiful lady,” referencing its historical cosmetic use, but the plant itself is highly poisonous and has long been woven into stories of potions, witches, medicine, and magic.

Datura — Datura
Datura’s enormous trumpet-shaped flowers can look almost otherworldly, earning varieties names such as moonflower, thorn apple, and devil’s trumpet. Beautiful but highly toxic, the plant has a long and complicated history in folklore, traditional practices, and poisonous gardens around the world.

Henbane — Hyoscyamus niger
With strange veined flowers and a wonderfully sinister name, henbane looks as though it belongs in an old apothecary garden. Highly toxic, it has appeared throughout history in medicine, folklore, and legends surrounding witches and mysterious potions.

Lily of the Valley — Convallaria majalis
Sweet, delicate, and deceptively innocent, lily of the valley produces tiny white bells with an unmistakable fragrance. Despite its romantic appearance, all parts of the plant contain toxic cardiac compounds — making it one of the prettiest reminders that beautiful things can sometimes be dangerous.
